I’m joining this space more to listen than to speak, as a white person, the everyday experiences this category names are not mine to claim. Thank you in advance to anyone who chooses to share something here!
During focus groups, roundtables but also during trainings, Afrodiasporic people shared extremely traumatic experiences with everyday, congenial and systemic racism -especially in Greece. In many cases, these were experiences that us -white Greek people- have never witnessed, which shows how they are both mainstreamed but also remain invisible. It is in instances such as these public forums that those experiences become more visible -yet not necessarily listened to or acknowledged.
During a group project atwork, I noticed that one person was often interrupted or ignored during discussions because they were quieter and not speaking in the same way as the others. At first, I did not react, but later I realised it was unfair. I started asking for their opinion directly and making sure everyone had space to speak.
This experience helped me understand how inclusion is not only about avoiding discrimination, but also about making people feel respected and heard in everyday interactions.
