I believe one important way to take action against discrimination is to start within our own circles: family, friends, neighbours, classmates or colleagues. It does not necessarily have to focus only on Afrophobia — simply creating spaces where people can openly reflect on discrimination is already valuable in itself.
Sometimes, just asking people about their experiences or views on discrimination — without assuming anything about their role in those situations — can lead to honest conversations and greater awareness. Bringing these topics into everyday discussions helps make them more visible and easier to talk about.
Do you think these small, everyday conversations can actually help change attitudes over time?
couldn’t agree more; change needs to come from within the host society; the Afrodiaspora already knows what the issues are and what needs to be done, and they are, very often, pretty vocal about it. It is the host society that needs to listen, become more culturally aware and tolerant, therefore, it is the host society and its institutions that need to be educated and trained to fight against afrophobia.
indeed what such initiatives make us realise is that those who need to be ‘trained’ and ‘educated’ is the host society
